The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) on Thursday warned consumers about the growing trend of patients taking prescription drugs that use a class of medicine called NSAIDs.
The FDA said consumers taking the drug Celebrex, which treats pain, should stop taking the drug and return to their regular doctor. The agency said the drug may also have potential side effects such as gastrointestinal bleeding, an increased risk of heart attacks and stroke in some people, and stomach problems. Celebrex is available as a generic drug, but the FDA cautioned that more research is needed before any conclusions can be reached.
“The potential drug abuse poses a significant risk to consumers and to consumers who may be considering using this drug for their health care needs,” FDA said in the statement.
The drug is a prescription drug that is used to treat pain, inflammation, arthritis and other conditions caused by certain medications.
In 2005, the FDA said it was concerned about the increased use of Celebrex because of a lack of safety data on Celebrex. The agency also issued a warning about the increased risk of heart attack and stroke in some patients.
The agency said it was also concerned that consumers who took the drug may have been exposed to heart risks and have questions about its safety.
“Our review of the literature has shown that there is insufficient evidence that this class of drug is safe and effective for long-term use,” said FDA Commissioner Margaret Hamburg.

The warning is based on the FDA’s review of more than 11,000 studies involving more than 2,000 patients, and it found the risks were greatest among patients taking the lowest dose of the drug.
The FDA said that it did not know if Celebrex had the potential to cause heart problems.
The FDA said that it does not recommend that consumers take more than two Celebrex pills a day.
A consumer advocacy group called for the FDA to issue an order to all consumers on Friday.
“This is the first time a drug has been linked to heart disease,” said Charles Krause, president and CEO of the consumer advocacy group Consumers for Human Rights.
“There is a growing trend of patients taking prescription drugs that use a class of medications known as NSAIDs, including Celebrex. This has caused us to believe that the use of NSAIDs, including Celebrex, could be harmful, especially in patients who are taking certain types of medications, such as arthritis and pain medications, that have an increased risk of heart disease, such as ibuprofen or naproxen, and may have a higher risk of heart attack and stroke, especially in patients with a history of heart disease or stroke,” said Dr. John F. LaFelle, MD, director of the Heart Institute at Rush University Medical Center.
LaFelle added that the FDA issued a warning about the increased risk of heart attack and stroke in some patients, and that more research is needed before any conclusions can be reached. “We urge patients and healthcare providers to be aware of this growing trend and to seek immediate medical advice,” said LaFelle.

Celebrex 200mg capsule contains the active ingredient Celecoxib. It belongs to the family known as non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAID), and specifically a sub-group known as cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) inhibitors. It is used in adults for the relief of signs and symptoms of rheumatoid arthritis, osteoarthritis, and ankylosing spondylitis. In conditions like rheumatoid arthritis and osteoarthritis, excess production of prostaglandins by your body can lead to pain and inflammation. This medicine works by decreasing the production of prostaglandins, effectively reducing pain and inflammation.
Do not take Celebrex 200mg capsule if you are allergic to Celecoxib or any of its ingredients. Inform your doctor if you had reactions to sulfonamide medicines, suffer from ulcers or bleeding in the stomach or intestines, or experienced adverse reactions to NSAID medications like aspirin.
